Conclusion

Choosing a paddleboard is only hard when you have too many options and don’t know what they offer. This guide narrows down the choices and discusses the features of the best paddleboards. Now you know how they compare in different areas. There is a board for every woman—whether you like inflatables, hard boards, fast boards, super stable ones or just an all-around iSUP for general use. Pick whatever makes you happy.

How to Choose a Paddle Board If You’re a Woman

Do you know what makes standup paddleboarding outstanding? Sure, it has health benefits and all. But other than that, it is something you can do alone, with friends or family. Not to mention that there are many cool variations. Regardless of who you bring and what you choose to do, you are guaranteed a good time. All you need is a board, a leash and a paddle.

Getting the right paddleboard can be a bit of a struggle for a woman. While there are many options, finding one that suits your physique is not easy. It’s always nice to get a product that’s designed for you.

When picking out a paddleboard, your decision will be mainly influenced by what you plan to do. So, before going further, here are some of the things you may enjoy doing on a SUP board.

Standup Paddleboard Activities

a. SUP Yoga

If you have tried yoga before, then you know how amazing it is. But have you ever thought about doing the poses on a paddleboard?

When practicing SUP yoga, you can’t afford to be absent-minded. You are forced to focus—which is a key aspect of yoga. Another thing, maintaining balance is challenging. Your core and every other muscle have to work a little harder giving you a fantastic workout.

Imagine how flexible you will be after a while—not to mention improved mindfulness.

b. SUP Surfing

Who says you have to choose between surfing and standup paddling? The two activities are awesome. With the right paddleboard, you can catch waves. The best thing about using a SUP board to surf is that it gives beginners an easy time. You don’t have to be a pro surfer.

Waves are less intimidating when you are standing. The paddle gives you added stability so you don’t get thrown into the water every time.

c. SUP Racing

SUP is known for being relaxing. Some paddlers, however, love to get adventurous from time to time. When you have had an overwhelming week, racing with friends may be exactly what you need.

If you get good at it, you can join SUP racing events and join a community of paddlers.

d. SUP Touring

Everyone gets to a point where they just want to go away and breathe—even for an hour. You may not have the budget for a plane ticket or gas for a road trip but you can always get on your board and go.

If you live near a large body of water, there is a lot to see. You can paddle all day and find a spot to camp for the night with a friend then paddle back home in the morning. With a fast board, you can make your trip in a few hours and come back refreshed. This is a good idea for women with a family or any other commitment.

e. SUP Fishing

Moms can teach their kids fishing too. Getting kids to go out these days is not easy. But not many can say no to a fishing trip on a beautiful day.

This could be a good opportunity for everyone to talk about what is happening in their lives. And it does not work for kids only.

f. SUP Recreation

You don’t always have to plan something or specialize, especially when your life is super busy. An afternoon out in the water alone, with your pet, kids or friends is enough. On some days you can take a tour, on other days you can fish and on others, you can float around paddling leisurely.

Which is your favorite SUP activity? For each one, there is a suitable type of paddleboard. But that is not the only determining factor.

Speaking of determining factors…

What to Consider Choosing a Paddle Board

How do you know that a SUP board is ideal for you as a woman?

1. Solid or Inflatable?

This is the first mental debate you will have when you decide to buy a paddleboard. If you still haven’t made the choice, here is a little help.

Inflatable paddle boards (iSUPs) tend to be cheaper than the rigid boards. They are also more durable. For whitewater paddling, you will want to have an iSUP. The sharp obstacles in the water will not spare your rigid board.

Another benefit of having an inflatable paddleboard is the ease of storage and transportation. They make great family boards too.

Solid paddleboards, on the other hand, are preferred for their speed. You can always count on their performance, even on important SUP races.

2. Size

Standup paddleboards come in many sizes. Those designed for women tend to be smaller. The size of a paddleboard involves two things: length and width.

Length

Get a SUP board according to your height. The shorter you are the more trouble you will have controlling a long paddleboard. As a rule of thumb, if you are below 6’0 you should look into boards that are 10 feet long. There are exceptions to this rule based on how you intend to use the board (more on this later).

Width

This has less to do with your size as a woman and more to do with your experience as a paddler. If you are a beginner, a wider paddleboard is better. Learning to get on your feet can be quite a challenge.

A narrow board will frustrate you because you will spend most of your time in the water and not on the board. Find a 32-inch paddleboard or wider, depending on how confident you feel.

3. Design

The design of a paddleboard entails several things.

Fin System

Most paddleboards will either have one large center fin or a tri-fin system. You can get others with up to five fins.

Fins in a board help with its performance. The big center fin, for instance, helps with tracking. This is the common system in solid paddleboards.

At first, you may not know which fin system works best for you. The wise thing to do is buy a paddleboard with removable fins. This way, you can see what you like and what you don’t.

Graphics

Having hundreds of paddleboard brands to choose from can be overwhelming. But it also means that you have many options. When it comes to women’s boards, a few manufacturers assume that randomly splashing a bright color will do.

Women love beautiful things—but that does not always mean bright colors. The good thing is that many manufacturers realize this. They are now making paddleboards with cool graphics and different colors for every type of woman. There is a woman’s board in just about any color; dull and bright.

Extra Features

Don’t focus too much on the “big” factors that you forget the small ones. Does the board come with bungee cords or, at least, D-rings? How many carry handles are there?

These features may seem insignificant until you start using your board. Bungee cords offer a way to carry essentials without losing them in the water. Carry handles should be three. One at the center and two at the nose and tail. The board will be easier to carry, whether you are doing it alone or have a friend to help.

4. Weight and Weight Capacity

A heavy paddleboard will frustrate you when loading it onto your car and carrying it into the water. If you don’t have anyone to help you, go for lighter boards.

In most cases, the weight of a board is directly proportional to its weight capacity. So, before you buy the lightest paddleboard, have that in mind. While you may not be on the heavier side, think about what or who you would love to bring on your SUP adventures.

5. Use

As mentioned above, your favorite SUP activity will determine the type of paddleboard you should buy. It helps you narrow down your choices.

SUP Yoga Paddleboard

To comfortably do different yoga poses, you need a wide paddleboard for space and stability. Imagine trying the crow pose on a narrow board. You will be in the water even before you nail it. A 36-inch paddleboard may seem like the perfect choice for yoga, but it is not. Go for 32 inches or 34 inches. For the length, a 10-foot or 11-foot board would be just right.

Unless you want to end up with sore knees, elbows, hands and feet, pay attention to the deck pad. It should be soft and covering a large part of the deck.

SUP Surfing Paddleboard

The ideal SUP board for surfing is one that is short—9 feet to 11 feet, depending on your height and preference. For a great experience, it should also be thinner than the average paddleboard.

Proper surfing involves a smooth glide which is offered by a planning hull.

SUP Racing

The shape of a paddleboard influences its speed. If you want to be a champion in the next SUP racing event, find a long, narrow board with a streamlined shape. It should also be lightweight. Don’t forget to check out the fin system too.

SUP Touring

Like a SUP racing board, a touring board should be fast and lightweight. A bungee system is another important feature. Most of them come with bungee cords at the front and rear for long-distance touring.

SUP Fishing

Fishing paddleboards are not hard to find. They are typically advertised as fishing boards. But still, you have to look closer. Does it have rod holders? How stable is it? What is its weight limit? You will be carrying fishing equipment and maybe a cooler. You require sufficient space and a higher weight capacity.

Recreation

This is basically an all-around paddleboard. It is wide and stable, letting everyone in the family have carefree fun.

All-around paddleboards don’t need to be fast. Some of them are gigantic and can fit five people or more.

Choosing the ideal paddle board for a woman doesn’t have to be hard. Figure out what you plan to use it for and the factors to consider. Your body size and the preferred SUP activity are the most important determinants. Once your paddleboard arrives, go out and have tons of fun. That is the main point.
